Baskets were made by the Southwest and California Indians for thousands of years. In California, they served as storage vessels, cooking pots, and serving vessels. The techniques of the California basket makers turned these utilitarian items into an art form, a form which has nearly disappeared today. This fine example of contemporary Navajo basket making is 13-1/2" in diameter. The unusual figural design consists of nine animal figures. The basket maker was probably a member of the Black family from the Blanding, Utah area, $450.
