Enjoy our collection of authentic handmade Native American folk art from the Navajo Reservation. Welcome to the Navajo Folk Art Page from Sunshine Studio - Santa Fe Indian Traders.
Folk Art is a creative artistic expression by self-taught people untrained in traditional art. The Navajo folk art presented here is created from memories of childhood toys, memories of life on the reservation, or creations from art in entirely new media. They are the creation of the Dineh (Navajo People), and are not copied from any other culture. Most of our Native American folk art is carvings from native cottonwood found on the Navajo reservation. For the most part, the artists doing folk art live far from the paved roads, use primitive tools, and speak only Navajo. There is a marvelous book, "The People Speak - Navajo Folk Art" by Chuck and Jan Rosenak, Northland Publishing, 1994. If you are a folk art collector and have not yet seen a copy, you should find one. This book illustrates the finest Navajo Folk Art today, and has a biographical sketch of each of many of the best known American Indian folk artists working today. There are 23 artist's biographies, 90 illustrations, and 160 pages. Both the hardbound and softbound versions are now out of print. We have no more copies!
The picture above is a turquoise man carved from cottonwood with a large black hat smoking a cigarette. This is an example of an original American Indian folk art design, "Camel Guy", by Dennis Pioche, whose work is discussed on pages 52-53 of "The People Speak - Navajo Folk Art." This piece, 6" high, is for sale at $75.
