| While realistic carvers such as Fabian Cheama and Dan Quam delight in literal depiction of the animals they carve and excel in execution of concrete, minute detail, the abstract carvers like Melvin Sandoval, Melissa Quam, Herb Halate and Dee Edaakie are drawn to ambiguous and simplified expression that captures the essence of the subject - all the more elegant in its simplicity. Dee Edaakie The unusual vantage point of Dee's abstract carvings of birds, badgers and bears can often cause the eye of the viewer to linger over the carving for a minute, in order to discern the animal's contour. Dee's fondness for carving animal pairs in fluid poses that meld with the stone is particularly effective in stones such as amber and onyx. Herb Halate Herb is best known for his angular walking bears in highly polish black jet, although he also carves in dolomite, pipestone and marble. The weighty, sculptural quality of his carvings is striking. Herb's uniform, signature aesthetic is understated dramatic elegance. His highly polished bears sport simple and contrastive turquoise bundles; his stylization is unmistakable. Melvin Sandoval Melvin's elegant carvings - typically badgers, horned toads, moles and birds - have minimal detail, not even eyes. Stylized geometric lines distill the essence of the animal in an unadorned aesthetic. Melvin prefers mat stones such as sandstone, pipestone, alabaster and dolomite, and often achieves added detail through perceptive use of color variations in the stone. Oftentimes his sleek, low-lying creatures are crouched in an almost defensive pose which gives them a quiet drama. Melvin was born of a Zuni father and a San Felipe mother. He was raised in Zuni and, in earlier years, he was a DJ in Zuni. Today he lives in San Felipe with his wife, Erma Vacit, from a prominent Zuni family who now works as an accountant for the San Felipe tribe. Melissa Quam Melissa's carvings are lightly sculptural, and she typically carves smaller animals caught in a turning pose, which gives them a gentle flow and rhythm. She tends to like the more decorative stones such as lapis, malachite and labradorite.

How to Place an OrderFirst click on an item in our catalog. This will bring up a single-page display with a larger image of the item, full details of the item, and a "BuyMe" button. When you click on the "BuyMe" button, a contact information form appears along with a "Confirm BuyMe" button. When you fill in your contact information and click on the "Confirm BuyMe" button, an email is sent to Sunshine Studio requesting that we check the availability of one item. The contents of this email are displayed on your screen. If you need a copy of this email, you can use your computer's PrntScrn command or other means to print a hard copy. After we receive your order, a Sunshine Studio staff member checks our inventory, confirms availability of the item(s) purchased, and sends you an invoice with payment instructions. An order to Sunshine Studio is built up one item at a time. For an order consisting of several items, select one item at a time and click on the "BuyMe/Confirm BuyMe" buttons once for each item before you navigate away from the item chosen. All items on the Sunshine Studio web site are one-of-a-kind. If we have several similar items, each has a different inventory number. If you click on the "BuyMe/Confirm BuyMe" buttons several times from several different items within a short time, we will combine your items into a single order. The shipping fee is applied only once per order. Note that for some of you (especially if you wish to buy multiple items), it may be more convenient to send an email to sunshine@sunshinestudio.com listing the item(s) that you wish to purchase. This email must contain a list of the inventory numbers of the items that you wish to purchase and a phone number where we can call you in the event that ReplyTo your email does not work. You may also put your request for addional items in the Additional Message box on the contact information form that BuyMe provides. To Cancel an Item: please send an email to sunshine@sunshinestudio.com mentioning your name and email address plus the item or order that you wish to cancel. Payment Options: At this time, Sunshine Studio does not accept credit cards from the Internet. You may "Send Money" to sunshine@sunshinestudio.com using PayPal in the amount of the total of your order plus $8 shipping (shipping is free for orders totaling $300 or more). You may phone us at (800) 348-9273 for US orders (or (505) 984-3216 for international orders) between 10 AM and 5 PM MDT weekdays. You may fax us at (505) 986-0765. We will need your credit card number, expiration date, billing address, shipping address, and a phone number where we may call you back. If you wish, you may wait for us to send you a confirmation of your order including an order total by return email before dealing with the method of payment. The total cost of your order will be the cost of the merchandise plus $8 shipping in the USA for everything that will fit into one mailing box. If the total cost of your merchandise exceeds $300, shipping is free in the USA. Be assured that all orders are handled on a first come, first served basis, in the order that they are received. We operate on a Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM Mountain Time schedule. There is a voice mail at our phone, but please be patient - it is set to record only after approximately seven rings. We prefer that you call between 10 AM and 5 PM Mountain Time. Note that Mountain Time is 2 hours earlier than Eastern time, that is, if it is 8 AM in New York, then it is 6 AM in Santa Fe.
