Welcome to the American Indian Basket Page from Sunshine Studio - Santa Fe Indian Traders - with antique and contemporary hand-woven Southwest American Indian baskets: Navajo, Apache, butterfly baskets, Navajo wedding baskets, Papago (Tohono O'odam) Horsehair Baskets, and Hopi Coil baskets.
Baskets were made by the Southwest and California Indians for thousands of years. In California, they served as storage vessels, cooking pots, and serving vessels. The techniques of the California basket makers turned these utilitarian items into an art form, a form which has nearly disappeared today. "Indian Baskets" by William and Sarah Turnbaugh compares techniques, materials, forms, and decoration for the entire range of North American Indian baskets. 256 pages, 139 color and 208 black and white photographs, 8-1/2" x 11", Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., 1986. We keep one or two of these superb paperback volumes in stock, $25. Priority mail shipping of a single book is possible for $5.
This fine example of contemporary Navajo basket making is 13-1/2" in diameter. The unusual figural design consists of nine animal figures. The basket maker was probably a member of the Black family from the Blanding, Utah area, $450.
