Zuni Fetishes by Felino Eriacho and his Students Available from Sunshine Studio

Felino EriachoFelino began carving in 1980 when he graduated from high school in Zuni. His earliest carvings were in antler - mostly owls and birds with beaks. He learned to carve from his grandfather, Andrew Weahkie, and from his uncles Roger Tsabatsaye and Will McKaye. Felino spent his early summers herding family sheep alone in the mountains of the Zuni Reservation. It was there that he learned the lay of the land, the habits of the native animals, and where he could find native fluorite, azurite, and travertine. In the mid 1980s, Felino studied mechanics at TVI and worked as a civilian at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. Felino moved back to Zuni permanently in 1987. He started carving Kachinas from cottonwood. He began carving fetishes from stone. He chose to use only stone found on the Zuni Reservation - native fluorite, azurite, travertine, and chert. In 2004 there was a large forest fire in the Zuni Mountains. The land was put off-limits to everyone including Zunis. Felino's source of azurite was unavailable and the last surface traces of this deposit disappeared. In 2008, Felino found another deposit of azurite. Thus it became possible to carve again in this stone. Challis and I first met Felino near the Inn at Halona in Zuni. He was returning from guiding a bow-hunting trip in the Zuni Mountains. He is a registered, active professional hunting guide. He does little carving in the late summer and fall during hunting season. Today, Felino is famous for fetishes carved from native stones and Kachinas carved from cottonwood. He sometimes overlays his fetishes with a thin mosaic of azurite and malachite. This mosaic is meant to represent the thin layers of malachite/azurite that were once found in the Zuni rock matrix on the Reservation. Today, these deposits have played out, so Felino has to use mosaic overlay in its place. Felino is an exceptionally good teacher. He taught fetish carving to his wife, Shellie Jamon, his older brother Melvin, his daughter, Jessica, his cousin Orin Eriacho, and his friend Richard Epaloose. How to Place an OrderFirst click on an item in our catalog. This will bring up a single-page display with a larger image of the item, full details of the item, and a "BuyMe" button. When you click on the "BuyMe" button, a contact information form appears along with a "Confirm BuyMe" button. When you fill in your contact information and click on the "Confirm BuyMe" button, an email is sent to Sunshine Studio requesting that we check the availability of one item. The contents of this email are displayed on your screen. If you need a copy of this email, you can use your computer's PrntScrn command or other means to print a hard copy. After we receive your order, a Sunshine Studio staff member checks our inventory, confirms availability of the item(s) purchased, and sends you an invoice with payment instructions. An order to Sunshine Studio is built up one item at a time. For an order consisting of several items, select one item at a time and click on the "BuyMe/Confirm BuyMe" buttons once for each item before you navigate away from the item chosen. All items on the Sunshine Studio web site are one-of-a-kind. If we have several similar items, each has a different inventory number. If you click on the "BuyMe/Confirm BuyMe" buttons several times from several different items within a short time, we will combine your items into a single order. The shipping fee is applied only once per order. Note that for some of you (especially if you wish to buy multiple items), it may be more convenient to send an email to sunshine@sunshinestudio.com listing the item(s) that you wish to purchase. This email must contain a list of the inventory numbers of the items that you wish to purchase and a phone number where we can call you in the event that ReplyTo your email does not work. You may also put your request for addional items in the Additional Message box on the contact information form that BuyMe provides. You may phone your order to (800) 348-9273 or (505) 984-3216 if you wish. We also accept fax orders at (505) 986-0765. To Cancel an Item: please send an email to sunshine@sunshinestudio.com mentioning your name and email address plus the item or order that you wish to cancel. Payment Options: At this time, Sunshine Studio does not accept credit cards from the Internet. You may "Send Money" to sunshine@sunshinestudio.com using PayPal in the amount of the total of your order plus $8 shipping (shipping is free for orders totaling $300 or more). You may phone us at (800) 348-9273 for US orders (or (505) 984-3216 for international orders) between 10 AM and 5 PM MDT weekdays. You may fax us at (505) 986-0765. We will need your credit card number, expiration date, billing address, shipping address, and a phone number where we may call you back. You may send an order by snail mail to Sunshine Studio, 3180 Vista Sandia, Santa Fe, NM 87506. If you wish, you may wait for us to send you a confirmation of your order including an order total by return email before dealing with the method of payment. The total cost of your order will be the cost of the merchandise plus $8 shipping in the USA for everything that will fit into one mailing box. If the total cost of your merchandise exceeds $300, shipping is free in the USA. You may pay with PayPal, you may phone us to pay with a Credit Card, you may send a Money Order or Check by snail mail to Sunshine Studio, 3180 Vista Sandia, Santa Fe, NM 87506, or you can request a layaway. On posting day, we do not answer our phone during the first hour and a half after new fetishes have been posted. Please phone us later in the day on these occasions. Please be patient - if you send a "Buy Me" message during business hours, we will answer within a few hours. If you send a message outside of business hours, we may not respond until noon of the next business day. Be assured that all orders are handled on a first come, first served basis, in the order that they are received. We operate on a Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM Mountain Time schedule. There is a voice mail at our phone, but please be patient - it is set to record only after approximately seven rings. We prefer that you call between 10 AM and 5 PM Mountain Time. Note that Mountain Time is 2 hours earlier than Eastern time, that is, if it is 8 AM in New York, then it is 6 AM in Santa Fe. We cannot answer our phone during the first hour and a half after a new posting.
