Dan Quam and the Cheama FamilyWe created this page to honor the love that Challis had for the Zuni Realists - Dan Quam, his half-brothers, the Cheamas, and their extended family. This love continued to grow from the days of her earliest fetish purchases to the time of her death in 2003. Dan Quam was the founder of the school of Zuni Realists. By the time he became famous, his technique had gone far beyond the simple, sculptural level of the other carvers of the day. Dan's style, which is evident in all his fetishes today, is realistic, be it incised fur or the smooth body of an animal. Another aspect of his unique artistry is the degree of animation that is evident in the posture of all his animals. These typically tend to have longer and more pointed faces than in nature, thin legs and tiny, delicate feet, and their superbly detailed tails seem to flow. The increasing price Dan has received for his fetishes over the years has gone hand-in-hand with his growing fame. Dan has taught his half brothers Fabian, Lance, and Wilfred and sister Arvella, to carve. Out of the siblings, Lance was the first to become prominent in the Zuni art world. For years, Challis understood that Dan Quam and Lance Cheama were synonymous with realism and high prices. Lance became famous for his long, thin creatures, especially mountain lions. There was a period in which it seemed that Lance and Staley Natewa (who was Lance's student) were competing to see who could carve the longest and finest tails on their lizards. Fabian Cheama may be the best technical carver of the family. The details in his work are often finer and more intricate than those of his siblings. The etched fur and delicate features of his animals are superb. He often carves tails that curl many times, and perhaps this is both a bit of flourish as well as artistic license. His fetishes now bring the highest prices of any in the family. Wilfred, the most prolific carver of the family, and who carves the widest range of animals, is the most realistic carver. The features of his carvings are a bit softer and overall, he is more faithful to the animal. Wilfred's incised fur looks softer than that of his siblings, and his animals have rounder and happier looking faces. Arvella has developed a style of her own. She is most famous for carvings of rabbits inside a log as well as hummingbirds, owls, and eagles, and each is unique in its own right. Vivella Cheama, Fabian's wife, has a style quite distinct from that of her husband. Her horses are smooth, sleek, and beautiful. Her other creatures are simple and smooth. She is especially good at carving angels and maidens. Karen Zunie is included because Lance lived with her for many years. She was quite a good carver before, but unlike the other women of the family, her style grew much closer to Lance's. In particular, I believe that she picked up the style and technique of finely incised fur from Lance. There are three young children, Adrian, Cody and Joanne, who are still in high school and who are developing styles of their own. It will be interesting to watch their work change as they mature. |

How to Place an OrderFirst click on an item in our catalog. This will bring up a single-page display with a larger image of the item, full details of the item, and a "BuyMe" button. When you click on the "BuyMe" button, a contact information form appears along with a "Confirm BuyMe" button. When you fill in your contact information and click on the "Confirm BuyMe" button, an email is sent to Sunshine Studio requesting that we check the availability of one item. The contents of this email are displayed on your screen. If you need a copy of this email, you can use your computer's PrntScrn command or other means to print a hard copy. After we receive your order, a Sunshine Studio staff member checks our inventory, confirms availability of the item(s) purchased, and sends you an invoice with payment instructions. An order to Sunshine Studio is built up one item at a time. For an order consisting of several items, select one item at a time and click on the "BuyMe/Confirm BuyMe" buttons once for each item before you navigate away from the item chosen. All items on the Sunshine Studio web site are one-of-a-kind. If we have several similar items, each has a different inventory number. If you click on the "BuyMe/Confirm BuyMe" buttons several times from several different items within a short time, we will combine your items into a single order. The shipping fee is applied only once per order. Note that for some of you (especially if you wish to buy multiple items), it may be more convenient to send an email to sunshine@sunshinestudio.com listing the item(s) that you wish to purchase. This email must contain a list of the inventory numbers of the items that you wish to purchase and a phone number where we can call you in the event that ReplyTo your email does not work. You may also put your request for addional items in the Additional Message box on the contact information form that BuyMe provides. You may phone your order to (800) 348-9273 or (505) 984-3216 if you wish. We also accept fax orders at (505) 986-0765. To Cancel an Item: please send an email to sunshine@sunshinestudio.com mentioning your name and email address plus the item or order that you wish to cancel. Payment Options: At this time, Sunshine Studio does not accept credit cards from the Internet. You may "Send Money" to sunshine@sunshinestudio.com using PayPal in the amount of the total of your order plus $8 shipping (shipping is free for orders totaling $300 or more). You may phone us at (800) 348-9273 for US orders (or (505) 984-3216 for international orders) between 10 AM and 5 PM MDT weekdays. You may fax us at (505) 986-0765. We will need your credit card number, expiration date, billing address, shipping address, and a phone number where we may call you back. If you wish, you may wait for us to send you a confirmation of your order including an order total by return email before dealing with the method of payment. The total cost of your order will be the cost of the merchandise plus $8 shipping in the USA for everything that will fit into one mailing box. If the total cost of your merchandise exceeds $300, shipping is free in the USA. You may pay with PayPal, you may phone us to pay with a Credit Card, you may send a Money Order or Check by snail mail, or you can request a layaway. If you choose PayPal, please 'Send Money' to sunshine@sunshinestudio.com in the amount of your total. If there are any questions, please e-mail us or phone us at 1-800-348-9273 or 1-505-984-3216. On posting day, we do not answer our phone during the first hour and a half after new fetishes have been posted. Please phone us later in the day on these occasions. Please be patient - if you send a "Buy Me" message during business hours, we will answer within a few hours. If you send a message outside of business hours, we may not respond until noon of the next business day. Be assured that all orders are handled on a first come, first served basis, in the order that they are received. We operate on a Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM Mountain Time schedule. There is a voice mail at our phone, but please be patient - it is set to record only after approximately seven rings. We prefer that you call between 10 AM and 5 PM Mountain Time. Note that Mountain Time is 2 hours earlier than Eastern time, that is, if it is 8 AM in New York, then it is 6 AM in Santa Fe. We cannot answer our phone during the first hour and a half after a new posting.
